What should I look for when buying a used tractor?

Posted by admin in used tractors on March 3rd, 2009

I'm looking at getting a 30-55 HP with either 2-3 hitch and PTO if possible. Need it for my vineyards.

Check for leaks, check all the fluids..hydraulic, engine, antifreeze, tires..look around and see if the front end and 3pt has been greased regularly or not, i would check the air filters to see if theyve been changed recently, might give some idea to how its been taken care of, take it for a test drive, see how the steering feels, the clutch feels, how it shifts and if the hydraulics are strong. also, try to get a john deere.

Would you turn in a trucker if you caught him filling up with farm diesel?

Posted by admin in used farm tractors on March 3rd, 2009

Yesterday I pulled up to the farm diesel pump to get 5 gallons to put in my can for my farm tractor. An 18 wheeler was parked between two pumps, using road diesel to fill his left tank, and using the farm diesel pump to fill his right tank. What I find amazing is that these guys can be easily caught by DOT, and the penalties involve incredibly high fines. Knowing that is illegal for commercial trucks to use farm diesel, would you report the trucker?
For the one calling me a rat, and the other wanting to know what I did, I did not make a report. I drove to another station and got my fuel. All I did was ask what *you* would do.
moms, I got all that info. I know the trucking co. They're local guys, they own about 6 trucks. And I'm well acquainted with the family. I'm just in a bit of a moral dilemma…turn in some old friends, and do the right thing? Or ignore the matter and pretend it didn't happen?
…pitbull, I *do* know the circumstances of the truck. I've been involved in the trucking industry for over 10 years in this small town, and I know their use of farm diesel in this circumstance was illegal.

As an owner of a trucking company that is a road company, I would kill my drivers for doing such a thing, however, you don't know the circumstances of that particular truck, so NO I would not report them.

Besides if that particular truck was NOT a farm truck he is taking a big chance of getting himself and his companies in trouble. He will eventually get caught.
